Fitting individuals into collective memory.

Whose memory makes the history books?  Whether retracing a fugitive escape from a Soviet POW in 1945, or walking across post-Brexit Europe from his home in Wales to his home in Poland, Michał Iwanowski will bring into focus the often overlooked personal experience and record of historical events.

From German to Welsh

We look forward to hearing Helgard Krause describe, auf Deutsch, her work as Chief Executive of the Books Council of Wales at Aberystwyth, her background in Germany and the journey to becoming a Welsh speaker which enabled Ms Krause to attain her current position.

Since 1984 members and friends of the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association have been meeting to promote German and the culture of German-speaking countries.

The Association has the twin aims of promoting the Cardiff link with Stuttgart and of promoting interest in all the German-speaking countries. Membership is open to all who sympathise with these aims.

Weinachtsfeier

Mit dem Singen von Weihnachtsliedern, einer von Ulrich von Hecker auf der Geige gespielten Fantasie, Lesungen, Gedichten und Glühwein, werden wir unsere Weihnachtsfeier hoffentlich genussreich gestalten.  Bitte bringt alle eine Kleinigkeit von Leckerbissen mit !

(With the singing of Christmas carols, a fantasy played by Ulrich von Hecker on the violin, readings, poems and mulled wine, we will hopefully make our Christmas party enjoyable. Please everyone bring a little treat ! )

Letters from Germany

Peter Jones
Peter will talk in English about his father’s wartime letters from Germany.  Jonah Jones was a Welsh artist and writer. Appropriately for the QMH, he was also a pacifist who joined up in 1943 as a non-combatant medical orderly and took part in the Crossing of the Rhine.  His letters have been published by Seren Books as “Dear Mona, Letters from a Conscientious Objector”.
